HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The birth of Exotic Shorthair began in earnest in the late 1950s, when American cat breeder Carolyn Bussey hooked up Persians with brown Burmese, in the hope of seducing a brown Persian. He ends up with a black kitten, but he manages to find an endless discovery that the resulting kitten is so cute. He believes that cat lover may like the shorter-haired Persian idea, which would be more easily done by the bridegroom, but it still has the same beauty and Persian nature.

At this point, short-haired breeds have been excluded from cats for silent crossings by less-than-honest breeders. While American Shorthair is crossed with the Persians to produce a better coat and to re-create Shorthair's appearance, Shorthair breed alone loses most of the qualities that make it proliferate.

These cat breeders make their paper fail so it looks as though these new physical characteristics happen naturally, and the cat association has no choice but for all but to end Shorthair's registration.

Ms. Bussey's exacting standards on breeding brought a more ethical approach to cross-development, and the result of his campaign to engineer this new breed is his registration as Exotic Shorthair. Beyond the initial lineage between the Burmese and Persian with the Shorthair of the United States, the Exotic is limited to crossing with the Persians, so its kind can maintain its proper status.

Outcrosses have not been part of the Exotic Shorthair breeding program since 1975, when gene pools are considered larged enough to produce powerful and attractive cats that meet standards.

This type was awarded the Championship Status in 1967 by the Cat Fanciers Association (CFA). The Exotic made rapid progress from there, and was soon in demand. In 1971, Exotic Shorthair first achieved Grand Champion status, and in 1991, the exotic was the CFA's Cat of the Year.
