PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

The emergence of this type has undergone major changes over the years. The 1953 standard describes this cat as "medium, dainty, and long", while the 1957 standard describes it as "in the middle between the Domestic Shorthair and Siam."

This breed type can be divided into two types: European Burmese and contemporary Burmese. The European Burma has a longer, narrow snout with a less pronounced nose break, and a slightly narrow head; contemporary Burmese have a shorter and wider snout, a clear nose, and a wider and rounder head shape.

In addition, contemporary Burmese wear a chocolate coat with pride, while the colors of European Burmese sport are brighter as red.

The Burmese speak in a hoarse voice as if having a bad throat because of too much chatting. It's quieter than its Siamese counterpart, but will snore when it gets agitated or upset.

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

In their home country, the Burmese type is sometimes called a copper cat. Their history dates back thousands of years and legends continue that the famous ancestor of Burmese people was worshiped at the temple as a God in Burma.

Experts agree that this domestication cat species originated from Wong Mau, a female cat found in Burma (now Myanmar) and exported to the U.S. in the early 1930s. Joseph Thompson, a medical officer in the United States Navy.

The Burmese were officially recognized by the Cat Protection Association (CFA) in 1936. However, as more breeders began to bring cats from Burma to the U.S., the species began to be diluted. Soon Burmese cats deceive hybrid sold as purebreds. The protest was poured and the CFA withdrew its recognition. Burmese breeders who have faith in this type continue their work despite the gloomy scenario.

Eventually their efforts were rewarded when the Burmese once again gained recognition in 1953 and given the status of the Championship in 1959.
