PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

It is a long, powerful cat built on a rather heavy line. Birman, with striking and round blue eyes with a gentle expression, is easily recognized by all the cat lure. It's colored, preferably with a gold cast, and wears white socks in their paws. (Surprisingly, the cat is pure white at birth but then develops colors later on.) The white cover on the front legs ends between the second and third legs, while on the hind legs it covers all the toes and extends upwards.

PERSONALITY AND TEMPERAMENT

Gentle and affectionate, Birman has all the talent to be a loyal and faithful friend. This is one of the easiest cats to be dealt with and at least cause problems.

Smart and curious, very responsive to training. He likes to bask in adoration and expects a lot of love and attention. When introduced to a foreigner, Birman was curious instead of alert and scared. It also adjusts easily with children and other pets at home.

HISTORY AND BACKGROUND

The history of this holy Burmese cat is immersed in legend. The story goes that the pure white cat lives in a temple dedicated to Buddhism in Burma (now Myanmar). They are considered to be the secret carriers of the souls of priests who have left the earth for their heavenly abode. This process is called transmutation.

The deity Tsun-Kyan-Kse leads this process, and is symbolized by a golden statue with luminous sapphire eyes. Mun-Ha, who served as a priest, worshiped this goddess at LaoTsun temple. He often joins Sinh, one of the honorable white cats, for his evening prayers in front of the golden statue. One day, villains from Siam loot the temple and kill Mun-Ha.

As he takes his last breath, Sinh, his loyal friend, puts one of the claws on Mun-Ha's head and faces the golden statue. A miracle happens: Sinh turns into a golden cat, with worldly hue and sapphire blue eyes. His claws, however, retain their original color as a symbol of purity. All the cats belonging to the temple also experience this magical change. Sinh died after a week of grief over his friend and refused to eat. According to legend, he brought the soul of Mun-Ha to heaven.

However, there are more scientific stories about his descendants, which can be traced back to 1919. Around that time some adventurous Birman cats were transported to France from Burma. There are two stories about the story behind their arrival.

According to the story, Tsun-Kyan-Kse's temple was again attacked. Two westerners, Major Russell Gordon and Auguste Pavie, helped some of their holy priests and cats to flee to Tibet. Vanderbilt who, in turn, bought it from a disgruntled waiter who was included in the LaoTsun temple. One of the cats, Madalpour, died on the voyage but the female cat, Sita, made it to France. After conceiving during the voyage, Sita is often regarded as the matriarch of the Birman type in Europe.

This breed type will continue to spread and by 1925, it was officially recognized in France. World War II greatly reduced the number of Birmans in Europe, which almost led to their extinction. However, some survivors ensure the continuity of its kind. With careful crossings, Birman once again re-emerged and even exported to England in 1955, but was denied official recognition until 1966.

Birmans were introduced to America in 1959 and officially recognized by the Cat Pioneer Association in 1966. This breed has since been established in the hearts of people and is one of the most popular. It has Championship status in all associations.
